Kachina Chapter represented at MarCom Mixer
Thursday, 10 July, Albuquerque the Magazine hosted the 4th annual "MarCom" mixer, a well-provisioned event that brought together 400 professionals from marketing and communication to nosh and network. Kachina officers Carmelita Wasson and Helen Moody manned a table stacked with STC brochures and Kachina Chapter fact sheets. After stopping by to chat, interested visitors and potential members left business cards to receive further information and to enter a drawing for a free Kachina mug.
Jean Gabriel voted STC Fellow

Kachina member Jean Gabriel has been voted STC fellow. She is shown here receiving her plaque at the 2008 Honors Banquet (with STC Past President Mark Hanigan at her side).
According to STC, "The rank of fellow is conferred only upon associate fellows who have attained such eminence in the field of technical communication that the board, by a two-thirds vote of all members, deems them worthy of being singled out as one of the select few who have distinguished the Society and the profession. Associate fellows may not apply directly to the Board for the rank of fellow; they must be nominated by a committee of fellows."
Jean moved to Albuquerque in 2005 after many years in Southern California. She's been a technical writer, editor, and indexer for 25 years. During most of Jean's career, she's worked in information technology departments, documenting custom software applications. Her background includes stints as a business analyst, systems analyst, trainer, and mainframe programmer.
Currently she writes and edits a variety of Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) documents for an ES&H Coordinator at Sandia National Laboratories.
From 1998 to 2002, Jean served two terms as secretary and a member of the board of directors of the Society for Technical Communication. At the chapter level, she's served as vice president of membership, secretary, treasurer, publications judge, Webmaster, and as a member of the bylaws and nominating committees.
Jean has an M.A. from Michigan State University and a B.A. from California State University, Sacramento. In 2003, she was elected to the rank of STC Associate Fellow.
Jean is the second Kachina member to receive this honor, the highest that can be bestowed by the society. Our past president and distinguished author Jonathan Price is also an STC Fellow. Read more about Jean's award at http://www.stc.org/recog/honors01_fellows.asp

Potential topics include managing translation vendors, implementing a content management system to manage reuse, using simplified English, and developing the skills needed to compete in the global workplace.
Please send your proposal for a workshop or discussion to pcoc@stc-etc.org by July 7, 2008. For more information on the conference and on proposal submissions, go to http://stc-etc.org/pcoc.asp.
Tim Hammon PCOC 25 Conference Manager "PCOC was a long-standing tradition in STC. For years I heard about it, but couldn't attend. Then, one year I did attend, and realized that it was not only in a beautiful place, but it was attended by beautiful people! Tennesseans are wonderful hosts. Their friendly attitude and excellent choices of program topics made the trip and the conference a joy. Soon after that first meeting, I was invited back--this time as a keynote speaker! Again, the trip and the experience were delightful, rewarding, and educational. If you can make it work, I suggest you find the time and resources to be part of this great conference!" Linda Oestreich, 2007-08 STC President
