Technical Document Specialist
(Position 00090922)

Selected candidate will research, plan, design, write, format, edit, validate, and prepare for distribution a wide variety of technical documents, including manuals, procedures, quick reference guides, checklists, data sheets, and forms used in support of mechanical, technical, and engineering activities.

  • Research engineering design specifications, interview subject matter experts, and examine equipment as well as coordinate documentation effort from initial concept to final product.
  • Create documentation from research.
  • Identify and resolve documentation issues, including problems with procedures, concepts, organization, presentation and usability; propose solutions to stakeholders.
  • Create and edit documents to be consistent with established, customer-directed document format and quality style guides to ensure consistency in presentation, tone and style.
  • Work independently with relevant customers to develop documented procedures.
  • Participate in document validations.
  • Negotiate with stakeholders to create and meet recommended project timelines.
  • Actively participate on project teams.
  • Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner and work in accordance with established ES&H requirements to ensure the protection of associates, the public, and the environment.
  • Other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • At least one year experience in technical documentation
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or appropriate technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience in a technical writing position
  • At least three years' experience using Microsoft Word
  • At least one year of experience using Adobe Acrobat
  • Position requires 10% travel

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience developing installation, maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, and repair procedures
  • Experience writing formal and informal technical reports and procedures
  • Ability to interpret written technical instructions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Prefer experience interacting with Government agencies
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent writing, editing, formatting, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to present information in a clear and precise manner
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a team environment

Technical Writer

A Technical Writer is needed to document several processes and practices that have never been documented. Our client is changing its best practices to include documentation of these practices to be a more diversified company. These practices include accounting and payroll principles, database input and practices, and other duties assigned by various departments. Another project is the completion of a technical manual that describes everything involved with a "rite of passage" ceremony, which is a complex manual that is 30% complete.

The Technical Writer should possess excellent listening skills, attention to detail, the ability to think outside the box, and be comfortable in a Catholic religious environment.

This position is in Albuquerque, NM, and is an open-ended contract expected to last at least one month. This is not a contract-to-hire opportunity. Pay is up to $28 an hour depending on experience. No telecommuting option exists.

As-Needed Technical Writer-Editors

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking as-needed technical writer-editors who will report to a writer-editor team leader in the Information Resources Management division, Communication Arts and Services group (IRM-CAS).

Experienced technical editors are needed to develop scientific, instructional, and administrative communication products. Team with writer-editors, graphic artists, and electronic publication specialists to produce technical reports, proposals, brochures, procedures, and software and hardware documentation. Write and edit for the web. Write and edit scientific documents for both technical and nontechnical audiences. Apply the Lab's three levels of edit. Manage multiple projects, and produce high-quality work within the constraints of deadlines and budgets. Work effectively as project lead and team member and work well under pressure. All work must be done on-site and on an as-needed basis.
